History of Cheyenne County, Nebraska
1986 – Volume 1
Audrey J. Buhrdorf, Compiler / Director

This is the standard modern county history for Cheyenne County. The cover title is Cheyenne County History. Libraries catalog it as History of Cheyenne County Nebraska 1986. It is a large quarto hardcover in black cloth with a pictorial inset, the usual Curtis Media format: narrative history in the front, then contributed family stories, photographs, and local institutions.

Cheyenne County was organized in 1870 with Sidney as the county seat. At first it covered most of the south half of the Panhandle. Banner, Deuel, Kimball, Morrill, and Scotts Bluff were later cut from that original territory. The book covers that larger story as well as life inside the present county: Union Pacific construction, Fort Sidney, the Sidney–Deadwood Trail after the Black Hills gold rush, open-range cattle, homestead settlement, and the towns that remained — Sidney, Potter, Lodgepole, Dalton, Gurley, and smaller places such as Sunol.

The family section is the reason most researchers buy it. Households submitted their own sketches and photographs. That makes the volume a working source for names, marriages, homesteads, churches, schools, and businesses that do not always appear in courthouse indexes.

Out of print. One good hardcover copy.

Useful for anyone with roots in Cheyenne County or the counties formed from it, and for collections of Nebraska Panhandle genealogy.
