History of Gering, Nebraska
The First 100 Years – 1887-1987
by the Gering Centennial Committee
Libraries catalog this as History of Gering Community, Nebraska: The First 100 Years. The cover title is Gering, Nebraska / The First 100 Years. It is a large quarto hardcover in black cloth with a pictorial inset: 576 pages of town history, photographs, and contributed family sketches.
Gering was founded in 1887 by Oscar Gardner and named for merchant Martin Gering. It became the seat of Scotts Bluff County when that county was cut from Cheyenne County in 1888. The book covers the railroad and homestead years at the base of Scotts Bluff, the Gering Courier, early stores and churches, the long wait for Union Pacific track (laid in 1910), and the town’s growth across from Scottsbluff on the North Platte.
As with other Curtis Media volumes, the family section is the working core. Households submitted their own sketches and photographs. Researchers use it for names, marriages, homesteads, churches, schools, and businesses in Gering and the south side of the valley.
Out of print. Heavy quarto; Media Mail extra. Local pickup available.
Useful for anyone with roots in Gering, Terrytown, or Scotts Bluff County, and for collections already holding Coming Home to Scottsbluff or the Cheyenne and Kimball county histories.
