The Researcher’s Guide to American Genealogy
by Val D. Greenwood
This is the standard textbook for American genealogy. Greenwood explains the principles of research, then the records themselves: census, vital records, probate, land, church, cemetery, military, and compiled sources, and where each kind of record is found. The second edition also covers the early use of computers in compiling family histories.
It is a method book, not a Nebraska history. Researchers use it to learn how a search works before they open a county history or a courthouse index. Later editions, the third in 2000 and the fourth after that, add the internet sources these 1973 editions do not have that. The principles in this edition have not gone out of date.
